Couple of things first. If you are going to be ordering a unit with Vista I strongly encourage to get a minium of 1 GB of RAM. Granted I would suggest sticking with Windows XP until at least the first service pack for Vista comes out as it still has very little software and driver support relatively speaking and for the most part at this time it is just eye candy vs Win XP.
Personally I do not like Acer. Whenever I would be working on them (irronically I was pulling one apart today due to an overheating issue at the shop) they just lack the quality of build that you see with some other manufacturers. Also when shopping for laptops, I would avoid the new HP’s like the plague as I have had three of their newest models come into my shop in the past week and a half with hardware issues. Compaq falls in the same catagory as they are the same company.
If I would have to make a suggestion for an entry level laptop, I would go with either Dell, Toshiba, or Gateway (however Gateway would be the latter choice of the three). As far as specs go, here is what I would suggest at min, for a entry laptop:
512 – 1 GB RAM
Processor can be anything but an Intel Celeron. Personally I am partial to AMD.
Save yourself some headache further down the road and go ahead and opt for a DVD-RW.
