ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR THE BEST LAPTOP NEEDED FOR 3D GRAPHICS ANIMATIONS?

not indispensably seeking for a laptop which functions excellently with 3d graphics for gaming, though for a single which is glorious for 3d existence rendering/modeling when i make use of program applications similar to 3d college of music as well as lightwave.

i’ve looked during a dell xps as well as it looks nice. i was only wondering if there were any alternative contenders. thanks!

Dell’s are workhorses and their support is pretty damn superb when a part stops working. I tend to use Apple’s solutions for 3d graphics. They are far superior to any of the Windows apps out there. But if you are used to Windows, then yea I would get a dell. Just spend extra for the faster hard drive and a good graphics card. I think they have the NVidia GeForce Go no goes up to the 7900. Or maybe faster. But yea, get the 7200 RPM hard drive and the best Graphics card. I’ve dealt with dell support for my servers and tape drives at work, and if something gets damaged, I call in and the next day, I have UPS showing up in my office with the replacement part.

As long as you get at least 512MB of RAM, a 7200RPM HDD and a 256MB graphics card, you should be pretty safe. Other than that, make sure it has a 17″ or larger screen (widescreen if that’s your intended target medium, otherwise widescreen really doesn’t matter on a computer).

Another thing to consider is whether or not you plan to run Vista on it. If you do, you may want to wait until Spring if possible. By then there will finally be computers that can take advantage of all Vista’s advanced features, like the Aero Glass interface, the SideShow auxiliary display, the enhanced use of HDDs with flash memory caches and the improved biometric support. Just because a PC has the “Vista Capable” logo doesn’t mean it’ll be capable of using the shiny new interface and other advanced features.

While we’re on the topic of Vista, I should also mention that for anybody more experienced than an average user the only real option is Vista Ultimate.

As for a specific model, CyberPower and AlienWare (which is now owned by Dell) seem to have the best deals lately. If you choose to go the AlienWare route, they have great sales, so sign up for their email newsletter and in a week or so they should have a sale.

ok I do graphic and web work, on a laptop. But, my laptop was over 3 grand. I got an alienware (Best laptop period). If you do not want to drop that much money, I would really want to push you towards a Sony or IBM. They are alot nicer then just mainstream laptops. OF couse, you will be spending about 1200-1500. I mean, what can you do? Laptops have not come down any, but at least with Sony or IBM’s you really get what you pay for. Stay away from Dells, basicaly laptops are not “long term” systems, I do not care how much you invest. They are more of a portable short term solution, then say a desktop. Frankly stay away from Dell, they talk big and Gateways are even worse… anything else would be good. But again, Sony or IBM’s are a cut above the rest. HP note books are not too shabby, also look to Acer, they have been creeping up as of late. Just look for theses specks, Processor AMD 64 -or P 4 2.0ghz (and above) HT (thats hyper threading, it handles graphic processing better)
    Hard drive: 60gb and above.
    Memory: 512mb+ (you really want 1gb [1024mb])
CD: A burner is optional really…. but I’d say go for at least a DVD Rom/ CD BURNER. (thats a drive that can read dvd’s, and make standard cds, not dvd’s).
I do this stuff for a living…. just drop me a line at the_great_washu@Hotmail.com, if you need more help.

The xps would work great for 3d graphics in gaming/intense 3d animation/modeling/etc. Make sure you get the video upgrade and enough RAM to handle those applications. I would say you would need 2 GB on any machine to handle those. I have a buddy that does some modeling and he has 2GB RAM and few issues.

Use a coupon if you go Dell. They have some until 12/7 and more will come out tomorrow. Check http://www.24houredeals.com/dell-coupons-23-mer.html for coupon updates.
