Best 5 according to cnet:

if you like PCs….DELL. Unprecedented customer service, tech support, replacement plans, etc.
You can’t go wrong with a Mac either. They too are excellent with customer service, tech support, and replacement/insurance plans. Not to mention quite easy to use. They are much more expensive though.
Apple does have excellent computers. You will have less headaches with this brand than you would with any other brand. However, if you are ok with a few headaches than sony, toshiba, and build it yourself computers are good.
Macintosh laptops (and just electronics in general) are the best in my opinion. I have had one for a year and a half and it works beautifully. The tools and set up are very very simple. The only thing I recommend is that every time you are asked to update the software you do so, if you don’t the computer tends to slow down or have problems with the internet. I even dropped mine and it works perfectly fine. I suggest you go to a Best Buy and check out all the laptops they have to offer. I’m 14 and use mine on a daily basis and don’t have a lot of information to save (just pictures, music and few documents). Mac may not be right for you so get a professional opinion. Tell them what YOU want out of a computer.
mac is really great in several factors.
but worth it
1) its easy, you can use it without learning a lot
2) no virus threat because of its unix architecture. Even virus affects your files system still remains fine
3) no problems like windows(bugs, blue screen, problems while installing software or lots)
4) they are really well designed and safe. if your feet stumble to the power cabloe of laptop, laptop do not kamikaze itself it has a great mechanism when sudden force applied magnetic lock breaks itself.
all this great features are revenged with the price. they are really expensivee.
if you cant afford or dont want to. i would recommend dell,hp,toshiba(its not much strong)
1) Mack is expensive, difficult (and expensive) to upgrade, inferior hardware that runs one variant of *nix and, if you pay extra, can run Windows.
A PC is cheaper, easier (and cheaper) to upgrade, superior for the same price hardware that runs Windows and just about every variant of *nix for no additional price. (There are PC laptops that you can’t get in a Mac, because Apple just doesn’t make them.)
2) HP has given up quality (not to mention the joke they call customer service). After years of buying nothing but HP, I wouldn’t take one for free. The problems they cause aren’t worth the money.
Compaq never made a good computer and, now that they’re owned by HP, they haven’t changed. (HP came down to Compaq’s level.)
3) Dell Latitude is good but a bit expensive. So is Sony. Dell Inspiron is a “how cheaply can we make this?” product.
I’ve been buying Acer (and their other beands, ASUS and Gateway) for a while now, and haven’t been disappointed.
Oh – Alienware is good – if you want to spend about 4 times as much as you can for any other decent laptop just to get dual video cards. (If you’re a gamer, the Gateway 7805u is probably enough for you – at 1/4 the price.)
