Acer makes some nice cheap laptops, however I recommend Dell most of the time.
If you’re looking for a cheaper laptop, a Netbook is a nice cheap alternative that you can still get most stuff done on

Sounds to me like you need a notebook more than a laptop , they are smaller and alot cheaper and they are used for typing documents and you can also watch movies on them ect … you can also purchase an external hard drive if you need more space.

I suggest Asustek. They build the Macbook, and less than a thousand dollars will get you a model with discrete 9650GTm graphics plus a high-end P8xx or T9xxx CPU. Tend to be a bit hefty at over seven pounds, though! Warranty is two years parts + labor, and Asustek often throws in a free year of accidental coverage for those freak incidents.

I would reccommend Dell. They have all the components for a college student, your school may have a discount for it, and they are wonderful regarding customer service, technical issues and repairs!!

Under a $1000 or slightly over?
Grab a iMac. I think their their about $1000 now.

    Also,

HP is a great brand. IBM is really reliable.

I’ve had both these machines before and they’ve last seven years with good care. My sister now owns the HP from 2001 and it still works just like the day I bought it.

    These are just considerations.

You cant go wrong with a Sony Vaio. I have had mine for 2 years now and is still going strong. Doing a computer science degree and copes with process heavy applications and software too. After working on after sales at an electrical retailer i would avoid Acer and HP as we had a lot of those back with faults.

Probably, there’s no relevant either you’re choosing brand name. It’s on the the hardware specification. Just choose the high hardware specification that suitable for your course. Doesn’t matter the brand name its on the used of the laptop.

toshiba are the best because they have lots of memory and good for collage work providing you have the software and they are under £400 at comet

HP and Dell are your best bets. You can get a decent setup from both of these manufacturers with a warranty for under $1000. Sony notebooks have dropped in price, but I would only recommend them if you are worried about both price and style, as a Sony computer of comparable specs will tend to be a bit more expensive than a Dell of HP. I know a lot of people that have purchased macs, but although they are stylish and powerful, they cost a lot.

Dell laptops are a great value. Not much difference from the other brands as far as whats included but service is number one. Dell will usually send you parts or a tech within a few days after reporting a problem. I have 2 nephews and my son who are college students and they beat their laptops’ to death. Motherboards, dvd drives, lcds and keyboards have been replaced on each. I believe that Dell has the better warranty.

I work on computers for a living. I hold laptop, desktop and server warranty repair certifications from Dell, HP/Compaq, IBM/Lenovo and Acer/Gateway.

You can’t go wrong with an HP. I have been using them for the past 3-4 years in both laptops and desktops. They are affordable and offer very solid products. You can customize your own on their website and get only the additions you are interested in.

It’s possible as with all computing products that you may run into some problems. However, their customer service is great and they will pay for shipping if you have to send in your computer for repairs within the first year.

Avoid Compaq, however, which HP now owns. They are like the low-end, “affordable” branch of HP, but the products are very unreliable and break often.

I saw a suggestion for Dells too. I hear they’ve been getting slightly better in recent years, particularly the XPS, but that’s probably not in your price range. My experience with Dell laptops is that they have all been lemons. We’ve had about 3 in my family.

So my recommendation is definitely HP. Happy shopping!

Who has the stronger opinion? I would subject a Dell, that’s hard price depending on what kind of entertainment your looking to do on the laptop. Another good way to keep the price down is to log in/or register with your school email to find what would discount you more, another way to find discounts is too call up the computer companies directly.
