    Dont get an HP laptop.

They are having major issues with their motherboards failing, and have so for the past couple years. I lost two HP laptops to the problem. The boards overheat and the solder connections crack.

This happens just out of warranty, and HP is refusing to fix them.

I always recommend dell computers. If you do a feature by feature comparison, you get more value for money. The support is very good especially compared to HP. We have two dell laptops in our household one is 4.5 years old and going strong. The other is 3 years old. I’ve purchased many dell PC’s for clients and they have all been very good investments.

I am a computer consultant and I’ve used everything. Stay away from Sony. Nice looking but terrible reliability and support. Also much slower performance. Toshiba is another very good reliable brand but Dell is my number one preference. I’ve dealt with Dell in America, Malaysia, Australia and Europe.

Cnet reviews of computers in your price range:

Before you buy make sure to head over to a Best Buy or any electronics store to see what your computer will look like in person.

You could go to the library and check out the magazine Consumer Reports–that’s an incredibly good publication for determining how good a brand is. Check out reviews for whatever brand you’re considering on Amazon.com, too.

If you don’t consider yourself great with computers, don’t forget to check out Macs. They apparently have the best technical service offered by any company, bar-none.

While HP is a pretty decent, reliable, and affordable brand, you definitely shouldn’t make the decision about your laptop going by brand alone. The question really comes down to which model of laptop is best for you, and the best way to approach the issue might be to compare different models from the manufacturers to see what laptop will suit your needs best.

Something that you might want to check out while you make this decision is a new application called “Laptop Scout,” which is designed to help people find a computer that best fits their needs. Here’s a link to the site: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-laptop-scout/default.aspx

You go to the site and enter what kind of things you’re looking for in a laptop (or just what you want to use the laptop for) and it’ll provide you with a list of potential PCs that might match your specifications.

I encourage you to check out the Laptop Scout for yourself and get really specific about what you want.

    I hope it’s helpful!
