Get the mac book or the mac book pro. They are the fastest, and plus no virusses or any crap that you get from pc’s.

    mac. http://www.apple.com

may be higher in cost. BUT it will last longer, is easier to use and maintain, and OH SO MUCH more FUN and EXCITING to use for audio, video, and photo media.

It will last you all four years of school and won’t be outdated like a PC Windows machine will be…and u will have less issues.

If your not familiar w/ a mac, then there is a slight learning curve, but it is worth the time. GO visit the apple site and see how great their products are. People say they are over priced. I’ve been using macs and PCS BOTH for over 10 years…and will constantly give the mac a thumbs up over the PC based on MY EXPERIENCE. And i think you would agree after about a DAY of getting your mac. :)

whatever u choose, do not get an HP, Compaq, or GATEWAY. If u MUST go the Windows PC route, shoot for a Dell, IBM, SONY, or custom build.

I would get a Macbook. I don’t know why the guy above me recommended a Macbook Pro, that would be a waste of money since your not playing games. A Macbook has all the software you’ll need to easily video blog and is very secure. At my college to use the campus’ online you have to download a bunch of crap if you have a Windows computer due to viruses. With my Macbook though I can get right on, no downloads or extra software needed!

If you don’t want to make the change to mac though then I would recommend a Dell 1330. It’s a small 13 inch computer that is perfect for the things you said you would be using it for and it’s at a great price.

Also as far as longevity either the Dell or the Mac will last just as long. Just because it’s an apple computer doesn’t mean it magically lasts longer like some people think.

Lastly, when you do buy your laptop buy it online. Many online sites like dell.com or apple.com offer student discounts that can save you a couple hundred off your laptop.

    *EDIT*

Well if you don’t want a Mac then I would recommend a Dell. There service is unbeatable and they also have video cameras on their laptops. Also, they offer student discounts like I said above.

…I think you would like a mac though:)

Mac’s are great, as long as you don’t have to share files with people on PCs. If you decide not to Mac, a Toshiba with at 2GB of RAM should be what you look for. If you shop from a big box retailer (like Futureshop) make sure to buy it ON SALE! You will save a lot of money. Be aware that Mac’s rarely go on sale (Apple controls the pricing), and if you do buy a Mac don’t buy the extended warranty from a 3rd party retailer. Try to go to an Apple store and buy their warranty. Other retailers will rarely be able to work on the laptop without sending it out, where an Apple store can usually do the work in-store.
Going back to PC….you will be getting a laptop with Windows Vista installed on it, so in most cases any old Microsoft Office software that you may own now won’t work on it. Try out Open Office (openoffice.org), it’s compatible with MS Office. If you don’t like OpenOffice, you’ll have to pick up MS Office 2007 (Home and Student edition retails for around $180.

    Happy shopping!
