    $500 is the “squeeze” point, isn’t it? Dell offers some laptops at $499, but once you add the “extra” options, the cost rises to over $600. You could try looking at Dell’s Outlet site, or by checking some of the pricing comparison sites. Personally, I like Pricewatch.com.

    I have an inspiron 1501.. it works really well it was 900$ when i bought it it’s went down a lot though and it is pretty fast and reliable.
    2GB of ram dual core AMD 1.90Ghz
    good graphics card.

    You can get a pretty good laptop for $500.

    Core 2 Duo, 4gbs of ram, 320gb hard drive is usually what you would get.
