Instead of looking at brand, look at style/price/features. While some brands are better than others, most manufatures produce a wide range of laptops from extremely budget-oriented piles of crap to awesome computers with more features than you know how to use. Personally, i follow these few rules:
Acer is crap.
Compaq is HP’s budget brand, so it tends to suck.
HP, Dell, Sony are good.
Toshiba is ok.
I use Dells exclusively at home for just what you are doing. Never had a problem with one.
I highly recommend Dell.
many of the top brands work great and are rated in the top by most experts.
By the way I am not one, so I did a search for expert opinions on which was the best,
my response was the top 3 were, Dell, Sony, and Toshiba.
My wife had a Dell, and I have a Toshiba.
mine is a year newer than hers, and I paid $400 less for mine, her was bought before duo core processors were available, so we cannot compare the 2,

Compaq is better! However, I think you should go with Compaq’s big brother, the HP Pavilion.
