It depends on what you are going to do. The 15.4″ is a nice size. Get the most that you can afford.

Widescreen, definitely, especially one with TruBright or Xbrite or BrightView technology. My personal opinion is that 17 inchers are monsters, not only that they eat up battery life like there is no tomorrow, you’re lucky to get an hour out of them.

I like 15.4″ widescreen displays which I feel is the best size without comprimising so badly on battery life. One of my favorites in this category is the HP Pavilion dv4000 which you can get with a 128MB Radeon X700 Mobile graphics card, okay, so that’s the only reason I like it but the other specs aren’t too shabby either.

If you are willing to comprimise on the graphics card then I like this HP laptop with an AMD 64 3500+ processor, Radeon Xpress 200M and 1GB of memory, http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/HP-Pavilion-Notebook-PC-ZV6270US-/sem/rpsm/oid/134806/catOid/-12963/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do

The wide screen is nice, but it makes the laptop bigger and heavier. If you are interested in traveling and want the most portable model, choose a smaller computer. Otherwise get the widescreen; you’ll be happier with the biggest screen you want to pay for.
