Make sure it does not say HP, Compaq, Dell, Acer, or Gateway on it.
You can get a Toshiba Satellite at BestBuy for $379 and it will actually work right. The mini notebooks are cute but you will wish you had a nice big screen after a few hours.
Make sure its a laptop
All major brands make good laptops, they also (on occasion, some more than others) make bad laptops !
Just throwing brand names or favorites your way will not help you make a decision.
I will not suggest a particular model or pitch a name just for the pleasure of doing it !
The only opinionated advice I can give you is to stay away from netbooks at the moment as they are rather limited for their price ( Less efficient CPU, difficult or non-existent upgrade path for memory, no CD/DVD inside, very very average speed, cramped keyboard and small screen ).
The only way to find and define what you would like to have is by doing research.
You will be able to find a good laptop (also called notebook) without the limits of Netbooks at an affordable price by doing so.
The first step is to get information on the current laptops and, as a second step, to search online at stores (like BestBuy or similar) for the best deals on the ones you would really like to have based on research.
This way, you get a good balance between the best working laptops and the best prices.
As laptop specs change almost every day, it’s good to get non-vendor, non-partisan, non-groupie information that will not cloud your judgment.
Here are some review/guide sites, they will help you do some checking to fine tune your search.
At each site, start by checking the current models (whatever the brand) and then compare them with others by choosing different options using boxes and drop down menus to customize the search and get what you want in your laptop ( there is also a way on those sites to look by the price you are willing to pay to get choices which won’t terrorize your wallet ).
Your time will not be wasted (after all, you get all this from the comfort of your home) and you should find something to your liking and budget.

if your not going to use the system for graphic design or gaming or anything like that then go for a simple system that is portable…although u dont want to go toooooo simple….I would go for a dell system….they are cheaper, more reliable and their technical service is flawless….for u i would recommend something like this http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/laptop-inspiron-13?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&~ck=mn
it is 13 inches which is pretty small and the cheapest one has enough power to do day to day tasks….
The mini’s u are talking abt are netbooks….netbooks tend to be a lot slower than normal laptops….most of them have very limited hard drive space and lack cd or dvd drives and they overheat easily….if u already have a laptop then u can go for a mini….but if u have no other system then i would recomend going for the dell inspiron 13 but heres the link for the mini
Mini 9 (which has a 9 inche screen)
http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/laptop-inspiron-9?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&~ck=mn
Mini 12 (Has a 12 inch screen)
http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/laptop-inspiron-12?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&~ck=mn
there are things called netbooks, they are very small and are basically just goining on the internet. I think they only have 80g hard drive at most, and you shouldn’t be using office constantly.
for a laptop: Dell, HP, and Gateway are pretty nice. Acer is a cheapper company.
try to get a laptop at least $1000, or it might have some bugs. A LOT OF time I get something that looks good and is cheap, but it ends up crappy. YOu might as well spend extra money for a little more than not spend enough and have to get another laptop
