Gateway makes the best laptops, hands down. They tend to be a little cheaper as well. If you don’t necessarily need the laptop now, I would wait until March 2009. The price can’t go anywhere but down. Good Luck in college.

A MacBook, or if you can afford it, a MacBook Pro. I’m in college right now and the first half of my 4 years I used a Toshiba running Vista. That took a shit on me and I replaced it with a MacBook Pro. I don’t know how I got by without on. It’s important to not that I am now what some people call a “fanboy” either. I’ve just used both machines extensively and the MacBook is worth every penny. The MacBooks can run Microsoft Office, which is going to be your best friend in college. Secondly, you should buy it now, there’s lots of holiday savings going on before Christmas.

I teach at a laptop/wireless high school. Us teachers get to use a laptop for free. I don’t use the tablet but the IBM thinkpad aka Lenovo laptops are pretty good and I’ve seen some other teachers use the tablet version of the laptop quite easily, especially for projections, saving notes (as if you’re saving notes on a chalkboard), which might come in handy for you in college. Don’t know what the street price is for one of these. I have a non-tablet PC with a Core 2 Duo Intel chip inside and the model is a t61. It also has a fingerprint scanner and a built in media card reader (i.e. for digital photo cards).
