You could get a laptop that meets the minimum requirements for AutoCad and 3D Max (looks like 3D Max has the higher requirements) but I doubt you can get a light weight (below 4 lb laptop) that will meet your needs.
3D Max requires a decent, 128 mb graphics card supporting Direct 3D or Open GL. Personally I would go for a laptop with a discrete ATI or Nvidia graphics card rather than an integrated Intel chipset. Generally you don’t find light weight laptops with discrete graphics cards.
If you’re planning on doing 3D modeling in AutoCad, Autodesk recommends a 1280x 1024 minimum resolution. Your typical laptop is wide screen as are doing things like 1280 x 900, which is below the recommended. The only way you’re going to get more than that is generally with a 15 inch screen, which is going to add weight. Personally, I’d want a higher resolution if I was doing CAD, but that’s just me.
I’ve provided the links below for AutoCad and 3DMax so you can get the system requirements and compare them to any laptops that interest you. By the way, the system requirements are probably *minimum* ones, so I’d recommend at least getting more RAM and a better processor if possible.
